Splice is total sci-fi camp, any way you slice it. The idea that a pair of neuroscientists could literally raise hell with tubes, petri dishes and masses of big gear in the basement of a corporate high-rise filled with people on the sly and not be noticed is beyond belief. And so is the rest of the story. But Sarah Polley and Adrien Brody do their darndest with every ounce of gravitas at their disposal to make this an okay outing.
It calls for nothing less than an Academy Award nominee and a winner to help us suspend our disbelief. If we didn't buy what the screenwriters are selling, and the plot is really far fetched, we'd be scratching our heads instead of hiding our eyes in horror. But these two have the chops to make us believe, sort of.
They play bio-engineers who are romantically involved and professionally partnered on a quest to blend genes of different animal species to create a new creature. It would contain something akin to brain stem cells to cure human diseases. These hybrids would be grown and harvested on an industrial level, or so hopes Elsa and Clive's' bosses at NERD.
As for Elsa and Clive, they have a secret scientific quest that goes much further. Elsa has decided not to conceive and carry their child, against Clive's wishes. But not to fear, they soon have a child, albeit a very testy one, when Elsa pulls off a secret- inside- a-secret experiment. She gleefully breaks all the rules as Clive lacks the backbone to put a stop to things that are obviously uber risky.
Their NERD experiments succeed giving them the inspiration to up the ante. They take the next scientific step, and it doesn't take that long either, to develop a sort of quasi human / animal baby. Dren, nerd, backwards, is a female with tiny human facial features, ears and a body, but she has a replellent, swinging tail, dragon feet, wings and other unfortunate parts. Dangerous parts, like a stinger that kills. She ages quickly and in the blink of an eye is a teenager, with dark moods, a rebellious streak and super human powers. There's an incestuous whiff of business that is rather unsettling, but in keeping with the go-for-broke nature of Vitale's piece.
So you see where this is going. Life is not going to be easy for Elsa and Clive. And suddenly, Elsa is starting to feel the pressure.
Director Vincenzo Vitale's gorgeous looking high tech fantasy has its roots in one of his earliest films, Cube. It was ground breaking in 1997 with its inhuman, hard edged look with its underlying feeling of dread. The concept of Splice is just too cuckoo for my tastes but considering its limitations, Vitali, Polley, and Brody do their best, and it's not a bad evening out.
