    Find Your Windows Version

    • If you're not sure what version of Windows you have, it's simple to figure out. Click "Start," then click "Run." If there is no "Run" button, simply use the search bar at the bottom on the Start menu. Type "winver" and hit "Enter." A window will pop up showing you information about the version of Windows you're using--for example, "Windows XP Home Edition SP3."

      Be sure to write this information down so you can make an informed decision if you need to upgrade.

    Find Your Office Version

    • Open any Microsoft Office product. Click "Help," then click "About." The window that pops up when you click this will tell you what version of Microsoft Office you have installed. Microsoft Office versions are indicated by the year of their release--for example, 97, 2000, 2003 and 2007 are all versions of Microsoft Office from the past 15 years. A notable exception to this naming paradigm is Office XP, which was released between Office 2000 and Office 2003.

    About Upgrade Licenses

    • If you're considering upgrading either Windows or Office to a more current version, consider getting an upgrade license. These Microsoft licenses are generally cheaper than the retail cost of the software but require you to prove that you own a previous version of the software.

      If you purchase an upgrade license, make sure you keep the old installation CDs or you will not be able to reinstall your upgraded version of Office or Windows if necessary.
