    • 1). Utilize existing skills. The money for an international research expedition is generally reserved for those who bring something to the table. An expert in a certain academic field, language or culture has something to offer. In addition, guides and people who can organize travel are often required on expeditions. Some expeditions may require a photographer or journalist on board to document the expedition. Examine your current skill set and see what skills and talents you can offer the expedition. If deciding to do international work as a long-term career, decide what skills would be useful to have and obtain them through training and research.

    • 2). Contact the parties who arrange international research expeditions. Start by looking at who funded past projects and see what they are working on now. Universities, museums and government agencies all conduct international research. Research the faculty at local universities and see if they are working on any international projects; contact them and see if they need members for a research team. Look at government job postings for opportunities.

    • 3). Network. Build up contacts in fields that do international research. Attend museum functions, research conferences and make friends with those conducting international research. Check the local newspaper and events magazines and attend functions at which academics may be present. A heavy metal concert may not be the best place to meet international researchers, but a book signing for a noted professor might be. When at the proper function strike up a friendly conversation with others there. Ask them how they are involved with the event or what their interests are in it. Mention casually that you are looking to for work on international research projects, if an appropriate point in the conversation is reached. If the person knows of such opportunities she may share them with you.

    • 4). Propose your own project. There are many organizations who give grants for research projects. Write a proposal for a research project that you would like to undertake. Determine a budget and develop a project plan. Pitch the project to potential investors. The proposal should include the purpose of the project, what exactly will be researched and why this research is important. Include detailed research methods, such as how the research will be conducted. List any key staff that would be required for the project and what they would bring to the table. Check for government grants related to the research.
