Lawn Edging Guide
- Weed eaters and mechanical edgers are the most popular form of lawn edging. Be sure to use this equipment to edge before you mow your lawn so that the mower will destroy the clippings. Use caution while edging around trees, deck posts and concrete edges.
- If you don't like the thought of having to edge your lawn on a regular basis, consider installing permanent commercial edging while the lawn is freshly planted. To do this, dig a narrow trench around the areas you wish to surround, position the edging, secure with stakes and refill with soil. Taller, decorative edging can add a beautiful touch to the yard, but keep in mind that you will probably need to weed-eat around it each time you mow.
- Alternatively, try creating natural edges with low-lying plants like periwinkle or ivy. Pebbles, volcanic rock or pea gravel can complement your landscape as well.
- Regardless of what type of edging you choose, remember it's always best installed when the lawn is planted. While it is certainly possible to add edging later, it will require more work.
