Beyond Blacktop - Choosing the Right Material For Your Driveway

Although the majority of driveways in America are either concrete or asphalt, there are other options out there.
If you are having a new driveway built or re-doing an old one here are some of the most popular options available and their pros and cons.
Concrete - Concrete driveways do not have to be plain and boring.
Today's options include concrete that has been colored with pigments or acid-staining or that is designed to mimic the appearance of stone.
On the plus side concrete driveways are long lasting and the smooth surface is ideal if your driveway doubles as a basketball court or play area.
The downside when you are having a concrete driveway laid is that you have to wait at least a week before driving on it and in the long run cracking is inevitable, wherever you live.
Asphalt - Not always the prettiest option but one of the longest lasting.
Because asphalt actually flexes with minor ground movement it resists cracks very well and with proper maintenance can last 15-20 years.
However that is the key, neglected asphalt driveways can deteriorate quickly and your asphalt driveway will need resealing at least every two to three years or so to keep it in tip top shape.
Crushed Gravel or Stone - Since there are a lot of different stone and gravel options available such a driveway can be a very attractive addition to a home's exterior.
Both stone and gravel are economical and both offer good freeze/thaw resistance and touch up often simply involves replacing a few missing stones.
However snow removal can be a nightmare and you may spend a great deal of your spring trying to replace all the gravel that was displaced.
Pavers - The design options for a driveway made up of pavers are extensive and damaged sections are easy to replace without needing to have the entire driveway redone.
The key to a successful paved driveway is the installation though, as if the excavation is too shallow or too deep the pavers settle unevenly making for a bumpy ride!
