How to Install a Downspout in a Corrugated Drain System
- 1). Use a ladder to access the corrugated rain gutter system attached to the roof and mark the low spot on the gutter with a grease pencil. Climb down the ladder.
- 2). Attach a hole saw to the drill, plug in the drill to an extension cord and ensure you have enough cord to reach the gutter from the ladder. Don’t forget to measure the distance of the downspout from the gutter to 6 inches above the bottom of the house. At the bottom, you will install an elbow to move water away from the house.
- 3). Climb the ladder with the drill in hand. Hold the drill straight and vertically above the marked location for the downspout, engage the drill and cut through the corrugated gutter with the hole saw. Exit the ladder.
- 4). Access the gutter again and install the gutter connection piece. This unit allows for the connection of the downspout to the gutter. Use the screwdriver to attach the gutter connection piece with the non-rusting sheet metal screws to the main corrugated drain gutter system.
- 5). Caulk the edges of the connection piece inside the gutter to prevent water escaping around the connection.
- 6). Use a needle-nose pliers to crimp the edges of the connection piece so it will fit inside the downspout.
- 7). Access the rain gutter from the ladder with the downspout in hand. Insert the downspout over the connection piece. Secure it in place with the screws.
- 8). Attach any needed pieces to the downspout to reach the measurement just above the 6-inch mark at the bottom of the house. Crimp the end section of the downspout so it fits inside the added pieces. Remember to insert the piece above into the piece below to follow the flow of water; otherwise, the water will leak out at each seam. Secure each section with screws.
- 9). Climb down the ladder and crimp the edges of the downspout to insert inside the elbow. This will serve to move water away from the house.
