How to Expand Memory on a Laptop
- 1). Consult the system manual for your laptop to determine the amount and type of memory the laptop accepts. Purchase compatible memory for your system. There are memory vendors listed in the resource section of this article.
- 2). Turn the laptop off. Unplug all cables and devices attached to the system.
- 3). Turn the laptop upside-down. Remove the battery.
- 4). Consult the system manual to determine the location of the memory sockets. Most laptops provide access to the sockets when you remove a cover on the bottom of the unit. Some laptops require you to remove the keyboard to access the memory.
- 5). Access the laptop memory. Remove any memory modules that are being replaced. Press the tabs on each side to release the module.
- 6). Install the new memory. Insert the module at a 45-degree angle and then gently press down until it clicks into place.
- 7). Replace the memory module and other components removed to access the memory. Replace the battery.
- 8). Turn the computer right-side up. Attach all cables and devices to the system. Power the system on and allow it to boot into Windows.

Click on the "General" tab. Look at the bottom of the list to determine the amount of detected memory. If this does not match the correct amount, reseat the modules and check again.
