How to Sew a Round Ottoman Cushion
- 1). Measure the diameter of the round opening on top of your ottoman. Find the diameter by measuring straight across the middle from one point to the equivalent point on the opposite side. Write down the diameter. Calculate the circumference, or perimeter of the circle, by multiplying the diameter by π. Write down the circumference. Add 2-inches to both the diameter and the circumference to account for the padding.
- 2). Draw two circles based on the measurements in Step 1 on two large sheets of card stock. Cut out the circles carefully. Create two more circles using the original measurements, before the two inches were added.
- 3). Lay out the upholstery fabric with the wrong side, or back, facing up. Place the larger pattern circles onto the fabric. Trace around the circles using a fabric pen. Discard the large card stock patterns.
- 4). Place the smaller circle patterns on top of the 2-inch thick foam sheeting. Pin the patterns into place. Cut out the circles using a craft knife. Discard the patterns.
- 5). Stack the circles so that the bottom circle has the right side, or front, of the fabric facing up and the top circle has the right side of the fabric facing down. Make sure the edges are perfectly lined up. Pin the circles together.
- 6). Sew the circles together with the sewing machine, allowing for a 3/4-inch seam. Stop sewing when the circles are attached halfway through. Cut small notches into the fabric around the seam at 2-inch intervals so that the circle will keep its shape. Turn the fabric around, or inside out, so that the exterior fabric is on the outside.
- 7). Slip the foam circle into the opening of the fabric. Thread a needle and finish sewing together the fabric circles using a back stitch. Place the finished cushion on your ottoman.
