How to Do Framing for Art

    • 1). Choose the right mounting method. Mounting refers to how the artwork is attached to the mounting board. The best mounting method is hanging it from the top of the board by hinging tape. This prevents future wrinkling of the piece. Mounting corners affix all four sides to the mounting board and are good for photographs and diplomas. The final method, mounting strips, are good for larger, more valuable works, because the piece never touches the adhesive.

    • 2). Measure for the right matting and frame size. The size of your frame will be the measurements of the rabbet or recess on the back of the frame that holds the mounting board and glass. Measure the amount of the image that you want to show through the matting with a tape measure; this will be your window size. The matting size will be equal to the size of the mounting board. Increasing the size of your matting window will give the artwork a more contemporary look.

    • 3). Decide on the right material for your frame. Remember that the material for your frame sets the "mood" for the look of your artwork, so think about the statement you want to make. Wood has a more rustic look and can bring an interesting accent to modern decor. Metal frames can be very stark and modern and are especially nice for photographs. Thin acrylic frames give your home a very minimalist feel and go well with brightly colored art.
