    Troy

    • Troy, or Truva as it is known locally, is located in the Canakkale region. Archaeological digs are still dedicated to finding remnants and objects from this era, approximately 1200 B.C. You can tour these digs and see both the process of retrieving the past, and exhibits of items that have been recovered. Booked tours are available, but they are pricey. A minibus can take you to the digs, where you can pay admission and explore on your own.

    Diving

    • Gallipoli is home to many sunken ships left over from naval battles in World War I, so it is a very popular destination for divers. You can book boat tours in Canakkale, which will take you out to where the ships are located. More than 200 individual wrecks have been identified and are marked for diving, including the British warships "Irresistible," "Triumph" and "Majestic." The "Lundi" was sunk in April of 1915, and it lies just 27 meters (121 feet) down in Suvla Bay. Its cargo is still largely intact, including ammunition, and it is a favorite of divers and a home to local marine life.

    Archeological Museum

    • The Canakkale Archaeological Museum offers five separate halls, each dedicated to a different area and era of recovery. Objects on display are widely varied, including jewelery, pottery and other ceramics, tools and an extensive assortment of grave riches.

    Sightseeing

    • Ferries run back and forth across the straits, and a ride on any one of them offers a great chance to see the Dardanelles from a different perspective. Charter boat tours are available as well. The Gallilpoli peninsula has been set aside as a national park, and preserved remains of the battle remain on display, in memory of the 500,000 men wounded and killed there during World War I. There is also a tower in the cemetery at Gallipoli called the Martyr's Memorial, dedicated to the Turkish soldiers who died. Finally, many visitors enjoy walking through the streets and markets of the town of Canakkale. The fusion of Asian and European cultures is nowhere more evident than in the assortment of shops, food and people you can see while out and about.

    The Sultan's Castle

    • Cannkkale's castle has several names. In English, it is referred to as the Sultan's Castle, and in Turkish as Sultaniye Kale. It is also known as Cimenlik Castle. It is the partner of another fortress on the European side of the straits, built to protect the waterway. The castle has leftover cannons and rough-hewn passages in the stone. The castle is also home to a military museum, which has an excellent diorama display depicting the Battle of Gallipoli, as well as an extensive collection of military equipment.
