How to Troubleshoot an MTD Snowblower when the Auger has Stopped Turning
- 1). Move the snow thrower to an indoor (or garage) area so that full inspection can be made while the machine is not in subfreezing temperatures. This will prevent any cables or controls from being frozen in any specific configuration. Inspect all operating cables for full range of motion. Lubricate the cables if any abnormal resistance is felt. Stretched cables are a common occurrence. If you suspect stretching, perform cable adjustments so that all cables provide the specified actions during use.
- 2). Inspect the drive and auger belts. They should not be worn, frayed or burnt in appearance. If the auger belt appears fine, test the auger belt for proper tension. Engage the auger drive on the handlebars while the engine if turned off, then try to turn the auger blade manually. If the auger spins freely while the auger drive belt is engaged, then the problem is most likely the auger shear pin. If the auger does not spin when the auger blade is pushed manually, the problem is most likely a blocked auger housing.
- 3). Unblock the auger housing by first disconnecting the spark plug wire from the spark plug to prevent accidental starting. Look inside the auger housing and locate any debris that has become lodged between the auger blade and the auger housing. Often a piece of wood or stone will become wedged in at the very rear of the housing, preventing auger blade movement. Use a flashlight, then remove all debris found.
- 4). Check the shear pins (or shear bolts) if the auger turns, but will not turn with the proper motion according to the engine speed or control settings. There are two shear pins and they are located along the main auger shaft and are centered along each auger spiral (left and right auger blades). Shear pins are designed to break in the event of an auger housing blockage, to prevent extensive machine damage. Replace the shear pins if they are broken.
- 5). Test the machine for normal operation in an above freezing environment. If it performs as intended, it may be used to clear snow again.
