Crochet isn't just for baby items or doilies--it's also a versatile way to show off your punk style. Punk fashion is an anything-goes expression of individuality, often including design elements like bold colors, strategically-placed holes, asymmetrical designs and re-purposed objects. Crochet can do all of these things, and scarves are a fast, inexpensive way to showcase punk style. These techniques and materials work well alone or in any combination to create original punk crochet scarf designs and ideas. - Freeform crochet is crocheting without a set pattern--making it up as you go. You're free to increase, decrease, change stitches, change yarns, leave spaces or make any other variations anywhere you want. A punk crochet scarf done in freeform could have narrow places and wider places, many bold colors, chunky yarns next to finer yarns or sections that deliberately twist, just to name a few possibilities.
- If you want to use a pattern but can't find one for a punk scarf, one option is to look for any pattern that catches your eye and re-invent it in your own punk-scarf way. A pattern for a breezy springtime scarf might take on a punk feel in midnight blue, or a spiderweb drink coaster pattern could become a punk scarf if you make a bunch and sew them together.
- Some yarns have fringe, fuzz or paper-thin plastic shapes stemming from the main string of the yarn, and some yarns even glow in the dark. These novelty yarns are available in craft and hobby stores or online, and they offer a wide range of options for punk crochet scarves. An aqua-colored novelty yarn could accent a black lacy scarf, for example, or a spiky glow-in-the-dark edging stitch could make an accessory punk scarf stand out at night.
- Crochet, especially punk-style crochet, isn't limited to yarn. You can cut things like old T-shirts, pantyhose or plastic grocery bags into inch-wide strips, tie the strips together and crochet with the resulting "yarn" for one-of-a-kind punk scarves. There's also leather, suede or nylon cord. You might need a bigger crochet hook for the thicker materials, but that just means your scarf will work up quickly.
- If you have any unused key rings, washers or other small metal pieces, you could use them as charms in a punk scarf project. Thread them onto your yarn or cord before you start crocheting and pull them up one at a time as needed to crochet them into specific stitches, or tie them into place when the whole scarf is completed.
