Belem Tower

A UNESCO World Heritage site along with the Monastery of the Jeronimos (to the east), the Belem Tower is located in the Santa Maria Church in Lisbon. Also known as the Tower of St. Vincent, the Belem Tower was originally built in 1515 as a fortress to defend the entrance to Lisbon harbour. Francisco de Arruda, its architect had earlier worked in Morocco. Thus, the tower has Moorish style architecture, besides the Manueline style that is depicted in its detailed vaults, crosses of the Order of Christ, carved twisted rope and armillary spheres. The tower embodies many stonework motifs and historical sculptures displaying statues such as that of St. Vincent and an exotic rhinoceros. Facing the Tagus River are the delicate Venetian-style gallery, arcaded windows and a figure of Our Lady of Safe Homecoming, a symbol of protection for sailors on their journey.

Built with a rare light-coloured lioz limestone, found locally in the Lisbon area, the building is divided into two parts - a rectangular four-storey tower and an irregular, hexagonal bastion. The whole tower stands on a horizontal slab, the corners of which have turrets. These turrets have figures of beasts such as rhinoceros that is stated to be the first sculptural animal art in Western European artworks.
