kaleidoscope-shears.jpgIt does not matter if you have dreams of becoming a certified stylist or just want to save money on haircuts, choosing the best hair cutting shears is one of the most important steps to take when it comes to creating professional-looking results. Aspiring stylists, professionals, and amateurs have a great number of options available to them, so how do you go about choosing the best hair cutting shears to suit your style and needs?

Decide on the right length

Some people prefer long shears, other prefer short. It does have some influence on the type of cutting you are planning to do. You measure the length of your sheers from way down to the end of the longest finger hole to the utter tip of the blade.

Do you want to be sure that you are getting the right size for you? Place a pair of shears in the palm of your hand; make sure that the finger hole touches your thumb. Now ideally, you want the tip of the blade to be in the last section of your middle finger.

Choice of blades

If you are looking to create tapered or layered cuts, choose a beveled blade. However, if you want standard cuts and slide cutting, convex blades represent the best option. Before you buy, decide for yourself what you want to do with your shears.

Choose a handle

When it comes to handle design there are specific advantages to the different types. However, the most important thing is what you feel is most comfortable. This is going to vary from person to person and can depend on your cutting style and the shape of your hand. The basic types of handle design are:

Even or level handle: The traditional, basic design. The handles appear quite straight and symmetrical.

Offset handle: a bit longer, this allows for the elbow and arm to be in a lower position and a more open hand position. Oftentimes people feel this is more comfortable.

Crane handle: Not unlike the offset handle, save for the straight top handle. It also allows for lower elbow position.
