How to Move a Child From a Cot to a Bed
- 1). Make the idea of moving from cot to bed fun. For example, talk to your child about how cool it is to move from the cot by making her imagine the benefits of sleeping in a bed. Create a story of a child leaving from one area and embarking on a journey to discover a whole new world in another area. Tell your child how strong and brave that child was for doing so and how happy and comfortable it made her feel. Tell her there will be a special party for her when she moves to the new bed. During this special party, invite friends and grandparents to cheer her on. Remember to be gentle, encouraging and reassuring when talking to your child about the idea of moving to a new bed.
- 2). Take your child with you when you buy a new bed. He may feel excited when he sees a shop that is filled with many styles. Try to get him involved in the decision. For example, hold his hand and walk around the bed store. Ask him about what he thinks of that big bed located in the corner or that small bed with colorful blankets. See if there are any particular beds that he likes and ask your child if he would be willing to switch from the cot to this new bed if you were to purchase it. If he agrees, purchase the bed.
- 3). Put the new bed in the same room as the cot for a while instead of making an immediate switch. Once you have bought the new bed and placed it in your child's room, do not force her to sleep in it on the same day, as she may still feel uncomfortable with the idea of sleeping in a new area. Ease the situation by having the child familiarize herself with the new bed, so she can slowly transition into a more comfortable state when you are ready to move her.
