What Programs Can I Use for a Jailbroken iPhone
- By installing apps such as Activator, Auto Location and SBSettings to your iPhone, you can get control of hardware features from an easily accessible control panel rather than finding the controls through the device's Settings app. This includes toggle buttons that turn connectivity options such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 3G, EDGE, GPS and Airplane Mode on and off directly from the home screens. Gesture commands on the home and lock screens open apps directly, or perform functions such as turning on the iPhone's flash light, opening and clearing the multitasking dock, and locking the handset.
- To prevent a standard iPhone from receiving calls and text messages, its cellular connectivity must be turned off by activating Airplane Mode. This also prevents you from accessing the Internet. Applications are available for jailbroken devices -- such as Call Blacklist and iCallList -- that allow you to automatically reject calls and messages from specific numbers, or from numbers without a caller ID, giving you much greater control over your privacy. Calls from contacts you don't blacklist still go through.
- Tethering is a form of connectivity that allows you to share your iPhone's Internet connection with other devices through a USB cable, Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. Although non-jailbroken iPhones can accomplish this by purchasing extended data packages, apps such as MyWi, Auto3G and Tether for jailbroken devices allow you to share the existing data allowance included in your contract. They also allow for greater control over tethered connections, providing additional notifications when devices connect and disconnect, and extended security options such as password protection and governing tethered upload and download speeds.
- The Winterboard application provides access to a vast repository of visual, audio and layout customizations for jailbroken iPhones. Once you install Winterboard from Cydia, you can download themes that offer new icons for native apps, options to change system sounds, alternative graphics for the lock screen, and access to a host of customization options not available to locked handsets. Along with whole audio and visual themes, you can manually change individual aspects of the iPhone's layout through Winterboard, such as changing the number of icons displayed on the home screen, or adding your own custom graphics to the lock screen.
