Cons of Going Green
- Birds may be at risk when traveling in areas that are home to wind farms.Wind Power image by mrfotos_fotolia from Fotolia.com
Becoming more environmentally friendly has many advantages, but this conversion is not a perfect system. Moving to a more "green" style of living does include some negative factors as well. Some of these may be items of convenience. Others, though, could damage the environment, raising concerns that the green movement may not be guaranteed to benefit the environment. - Several different forms of renewable energy are affected by the weather, according to the Stonebrook Group. With solar power, the energy can only be harvested on sunny days with minimal cloud cover, according to the website. This also means that the number of days for collecting solar energy in a specific location is limited. For wind power, the turbines must be placed in areas that have constant high speed winds to enable the energy collection.
- While going green is meant to preserve the environment, the effort can damage it as well, according to the Stonebrook Group website. Wind turbines present a hazard to birds and other airborne wildlife in the area, the website says. Collecting water for hydroelectricity can result in the change of water patterns, killing vegetation that no longer receives the needed water. The death of this vegetation then produces methane gas which is dangerous for the environment. The discharged water from a hydroelectric plant is cold, and that can alter the living conditions for sea life, killing some that can't adjust.
- Green buildings use natural ventilation to supplement systems that run on electricity, according to Labor Law Center. Controlling the airflow and temperature in the building is not as precise as when using a traditional thermostat, the website says. Green roofs require several layers to support the growth of vegetation on the roof of the building. This includes the soil to grow the plants as well as a system below the soil to drain the water that accumulates after storms. This can increase the weight on the room, requiring more expensive roofing to be installed to support that weight.
- Collecting rain water for drinking is one of the negatives of the green movement according to Classes and Careers. Even if the water is filtered, it's not sterilized using the same energy consuming equipment. This means that the water will have a slightly different taste compared with water that is processed using traditional water filtration and water processing.
