Facts on Acne
- Blocked pores, called whiteheads or blackheads, are a form of acne. Inflamed pustules, called pimples, are also a type of acne. The most severe form of acne is called cystic acne, which is characterized by large lumps filled with pus.
- Topical treatments, such as benzoyl peroxide or antibiotics, may be prescribed to help clear pores and reduce bacteria on the skin. Oral antibiotics or birth control pills may also be prescribed to help treat acne. In severe acne cases, surgery or chemical peels may be necessary.
- Acne that is left untreated may cause permanent scarring.
- Diet does not play a role in the severity or frequency of acne attacks.
- Keeping skin clean can keep further acne outbreaks from occurring. Using oil-free cosmetics can also prevent acne from developing.
