Fish Oil Treatments for Rosacea
- Rosacea is a chronic, inflammatory disease that typically affects the facial skin. It begins as a redness (flushing) of the face. Over time blood vessels in the face may become more noticeable, and if left untreated, bumps and pimples may form as well.
- The exact cause of rosacea is unknown. Genetic factors are thought to play a role. Lighter skinned people are more commonly affected as are women, although men have more severe symptoms if they develop the condition.
- There is no known cure for rosacea. Flare-ups can be treated with certain acne medications; although different from acne, there are similarities between the two. Laser treatments or intense pulse light are options as well.
- Fish oil is an omega-3 fatty acid. This type of fatty acid has been shown to reduce the inflammatory response in cells. Because rosacea is an inflammatory disease, fish oil is beneficial.
- The best source of fish oil is salmon. It can be found in smaller, yet beneficial, quantities in halibut, scallops and shrimp.
