Tricks for Getting the Groom More Involved in Wedding Planning

Common wisdom says that the wedding is all about the bride. And there is at least a grain of truth in this. The wedding dress usually costs more than all of the tuxes for wedding party combined. The wedding ceremony doesn't truly begin until the bride appears and everyone quiets when she does. The flowers, the decorations, and usually most of the planning is arranged by and around the tastes of the bride. But just because the groom, and honestly most of the invited men, usually have little interest in the wedding beyond the food and alcohol, that doesn't mean your wedding has to be that way. The following tricks are ideal for making your wedding appeal more to your groom and male guests in general.

Music Selection

Let's be honest. Nobody really wants to see Aunt Betty and Uncle George dancing the funky chicken at another wedding. The ugly truth about wedding music is that it is usually a selection of music that few people actually dislike, with just a few songs people actually really enjoy and at least one of Macarena, Locomotion, or Gangnam Style. Just look at this list of current popular wedding songs and guess how many your groom has even heard of.

Rather than settle for music nobody wants, encourage the groom to select a song list based on his personal tastes. As music is one of the biggest mood setters for any wedding, this will let him feel like he is significantly invested in the reception. You can pick together as a couple, but that is where compromises and bad music comes from. You should also make your own song list and then get your DJ to mix the lists randomly or evenly. Your wedding will have better music overall and the groom, and most likely his male friends, will be more excited.

Dress Each Other

The process of choosing a wedding dress usually involves a full day or more at various boutiques discussing the merits of lace and pearls with the maid of honor. While it can be a lot of fun, it is very time consuming and often stressful. On the other hand, the groom usually picks his tux, and the tuxes of all his groomsmen, in about an hour. Show some trust in your future husband and flip the script. Let him select your wedding gown while you select his tux. For starters, it will certainly take less time, even taking into account the need for fittings.

Additionally, it gets your fiancee interested in a part of the wedding that usually gets little attention from men. As an added bonus, when the groom is involved in the selection of the wedding dress, he less likely to flinch at the cost since he picked it out.

Entertain the Savages

In this case, the word 'savages' is simply a reference to men who don't particularly enjoy dancing. If you've been to any number of weddings, you are probably aware that women tend to enjoy dancing more than the men. Even with a music selection half chosen by the groom, this is still likely to be true. A nice solution, if your venue has the room and you can afford it, is to have a side table or room that offers alternate entertainment. A large card table and a few decks of cards is an inexpensive option, while a large screen TV that is playing sports or a movie is a more expensive option. In the right venue you may even have access to a small arcade. Let your groom give input or even make all the arrangements. Just make sure to wait until after dinner and the toasts are done to open these up.
