Bed Bugs Are Waiting for You In Your Hotel!

"The bed bugs are coming, the bed bugs are coming" is a cruel fact that many a modern day Paul Revere's are finding themselves expressing.
"Don't let the bed bugs bite," is no longer a night time jocular wish to a sleepy toddler.
It's a cry of anguish when more and more households are discovering that they too have been infested.
The extensive use of DDT in post WWII America and elsewhere caused enormous environmental effects, but it did work.
One of the pests that succumbed was the bed bug.
To the point that most American's have never heard of anyone actually being bitten by a bed bug.
Today we can be thankful that bald eagles and other endangered species are making a come back, but with the good comes the bad.
Also on the comeback road is the bed bug, which has plagued humans at least as far back as Aristotle's time.
While some attribute the return to an influx of immigrants to the US, the reality is that these bugs never really left us.
In recent years it has mushroomed in population by hanging around hotel and motel rooms waiting to be picked up and transported home in your luggage.
The constant in and out of travelers makes it impossible for even the most fastidious of hotels to eliminate the spread of these blood thirsty transients.
It's taken years for a small and beaten back population of bugs to re-establish itself, but now that it has the rate of expansion is likely to continue to accelerate.
Add to that the ever increasing mobility of our population and its a foregone conclusion that the infestation will grow and grow.
The best course of action is to prevent bringing them back to your home, by being careful when you travel.
Bring your own bug spray with you.
There are many brands of effective and safe sprays that will give you peace of mind while you sleep.
First though do an initial inspection of your bed, look for brown spots on the sheets, and check the edges and any folds in the mattress.
Then spray the surrounding area to prevent any bugs from joining you for a midnight snack.
Even more importantly, consider not unpacking your suitcase.
Instead bring along a large plastic garbage bag and keep your luggage in that bag, tightly sealed during your stay.
You can also buy luggage bags made specifically for the purpose of keeping your luggage safe and free from any would be hitchhikers.
While you may want to return home with souvenirs for your kids, you don't want to bring them home any pet bed bugs.
