How to Build a Great Resume

    • 1). Download a RESUME TEMPLATE. There are a number of good templates on the web that will work with your word processor. Choose one appropriate to your chosen career. If a dignified look is called for, don't use an "artsy" look. If you're into creative arts, let that talent guide you.

    • 2). Use STANDARD FONTS that are easy to read. Even though there are a lot of cute fonts out there, easy to read trumps all other considerations. Remember, you're trying to transmit information. That is your priority.

    • 3). Keep your resume to TWO PAGES at the most. Brevity makes your good points stand out. Keep your sentences brief also.

    • 4). Include CONTACT INFORMATION. A number of resumes fail to list the simple things like telephone numbers, mailing and email addresses. Make sure these are in your document. If you have a web resume, or a general informational website, include that. Don't include hobby or web information that does not directly apply to the position.

    • 5). List your EDUCATION. Put your highest degree earned on top of the list. Don't forget to show off any additional certificates earned. Colleges should be listed as degree, college and date, such as: "BS State University 1980."

    • 6). Document your PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE. Start with your most recent employment. List the dates of employment, your title, and a short description of your duties. No, listing salaries is not appropriate.

    • 7). Show off your PUBLICATIONS and AWARDS. Include the title of the items and the dates.

    • 8). Display your PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATIONS and LICENSES. Display the licenses above the associations.

    • 9). Provide three PROFESSIONAL REFERENCES. This is optional, but advised. Display each person's full name, their title, their email address and their phone number.

Use DYNAMIC WORDS. Words such as "successful," "achieved" and the like portray someone who gets the job done.

Don't list much PERSONAL INFORMATION. You never know if your interest in chain saw art will turn off a prospective employer.

Other DON'Ts: Don't use crinkled or soiled paper. Don't use too much color (unless you're applying for an art job). Don't forget a brief cover letter introducing your resume, which should point out highlights.
