Troubleshooting PC Speakers

    Check Power

    • Your computer speakers need power to run. If they are receiving power, a light will appear on one of the speakers. If there is no light, then you do not have power. Check the cords leading out from the speakers and look for one heading to a wall socket. If it is out, then plug it in. However, some speakers derive their power directly from the computer. If yours do not have a power cord, then move on.

    Check the Connection

    • The other cord running out from the speakers will be the one from which the speakers receive their sound. Follow that wire to see where it plugs in, or if it plugs in. Some sound cards are very poorly labeled, and even improperly color-coded. If your speakers are plugged in and you don't have any sound, plug your speakers into any hole on the back of the computer that look similar while running a song or video file with sound. Wait until you hear it working. If this doesn't work, move to Step 3.

    Check Speakers

    • If you've tried steps 1 and 2 with no luck, unplug the speakers and hook them into something that uses a headphone jack, like an iPod or a different computer, or maybe a laptop. If the speakers work, then your sound card is not functioning. If the speakers don't work, then you need to replace your speakers. You may want to check the warranty from your manufacturer, but these vary widely from company to company.
