True Leaders Are Creative

Vilayat Inaat Khan wrote, "The human spirit lives on creativity and dies in conformity and routine.
" There is perhaps no greater example of the veracity of this statement than when one examines the ideal leadership model.
As I have trained over one thousand leaders in the the last over thirty years, I have come to realize that while a professional leadership trainer, no matter how proficient and superb, can only guide others in the necessities of leadership.
A trainer can teach technique, and discuss essential aspects of positive attitude, individuality, organization, people skills, etc.
, but can not wave a magic wand and make someone a creative leader.
Especially in these trying times for many organizations, where membership and financial issues have become increasingly challenging issues, there is a need for creative and innovative leadership.
1.
Leaders must think outside the box.
Unfortunately, that expression has often become more rhetoric than action, and many ineffective leaders actually believe they are thinking outside the box.
However, truly innovative individuals are those with the ability and the mindset to take the time and energy to painstakingly examine the what was, the what is, the what will be if the status quo is maintained, and the what can and should be.
They then develop ideas, methods, goals, and a clearly articulated vision for what the future can be, and what must be done, and why.
For many years, those in leadership positions often viewed themselves as caretakers, and the protectors of the ordinary.
However, with changing times, and different socioeconomic conditions, as well as the dramatic onset of the digital information age, today's true leaders must be more innovative and creative.
Organizations with an evolved plan for change shall be the once that remain viable, while many of the old stalwarts will perish if they do not adapt.
Members must look for leaders who embrace the maintenance of the purpose and needs of the organization, while creatively seeking alternative approaches.
2.
In today's environment, organizations often find it more challenging to do fundraising, because of both the difficult economic conditions, as well as the increased amount of competition for donor's support.
Too many organizations are still overly dependent on the same tired methods of fundraising, continuing their often lackluster raffles, hosting galas or evenings out, printing journals, etc.
However, while these organizations continue to insist on doing business as usual, others have embraced innovative ideas, twists, concepts or ways of doing things.
In many cases, it means streamlining an operation, while in some cases it means combining some good old ideas, while dressing them up as something new, while in other situations, it means doing something truly unique.
However, those organizations that recognize this scenario have a far better chance of remaining viable and flourishing, than those than stick to doing things the way they always have.
Anyone can call himself a leader.
However, only someone willing to truly think creatively and innovatively, while constantly using evolutionary rather than revolutionary change, and avoiding simply holding onto the status quo, has the chance do something great, and being a truly effective and meaningful leader.
