Homemade Remedy for Removing Pet Odors from Upholstery
- 1). Sprinkle a generous layer of fresh baking soda over the upholstered furniture, over pillows and under cushions. Allow the baking soda to sit for eight to 12 hours. Vacuum the baking soda off of the furniture.
- 2). Grind 1/2 cup dried lavender in a spice grinder or coffee mill, mix in with 1/2 cup fresh baking soda. Sprinkle over all upholstered surfaces and allow to sit overnight. Vacuum the mixture from the upholstery, leaving behind a clean floral scent.
- 3). Wash upholstery with 1-quart of warm water, 1/4-cup of white vinegar and a squirt of clear liquid hand soap. Use a hand-mixer to blend and create suds. Wet a clean sponge, dip the sponge in only the suds and rub down the upholstery to clean and deodorize. Always test a hidden area for colorfastness.
- 4). Mix 3/4 cup warm water, 3 drops of tea tree essential oil and 6 drops of one of the following essential oils: lemon, orange, eucalyptus or cedar. Shake well in a spray bottle and mist furniture. Test a hidden spot for colorfastness. Check with your vet for safety when using in the presence of cats.
- 5). Fill a spray bottle with equal amounts of water and white vinegar; mist on upholstered furniture. The vinegar smell dissipates quickly, leaving behind a fresh scent.
