How to Travel Cheap to Guatemala
- 1). Choose your transportation. Two ways are available to travel directly to Guatemala from the United States---fly or drive. The Pan American Highway will take you from Mexico to Guatemala if you choose to drive. If you prefer to fly, American Airlines, Delta, TACA, Continental Airlines and Spirit Airlines all have direct flights from the United States to Guatemala City. No direct train or bus service to Guatemala is available from the United States. Bus and plane service are available from Mexico City or Cancun to Guatemala. You may want to fly to Mexico and take a bus from there.
- 2). Book your plane or bus tickets. If you are flying, reservations may be made online or by phone. If you plan to pick up a bus in Mexico, tickets should be purchased at the station when you get there. Mexican buses can range from extremely poor to top notch. This is a long bus trip that will take several days, so it is recommended that you buy the best class of service you can afford.
- 3). Plan your road trip. If you plan on driving to Guatemala, you will need to purchase insurance that will cover you while in Mexico, Guatemala and countries in between. Have your car thoroughly serviced before leaving the United States to avoid car problems on the way.
- 4). Enjoy your trip. Guatemala is a beautiful country rich with history, flora and fauna. Things to do include touring volcanoes, visiting the Mayan ruins and exploring the jungles.
