What Are the Restrictions for the Airlines?
- Since the events of 9/11, airline travel has quickly become one of the more restricted ways to travel. Airline bankruptcy and mergers have forced airlines to cut costs and further restrict what you can bring on a plane. With each new attempted attack, a new regulation seems to come up. No matter what your opinion is on these restrictions, you have to abide by them to travel by airplane.
- Completely banned items are any items that could put someone in immediate danger. They should not be brought to the airport at all. These items include explosives, flammable items such as paints, propellants, gas, matches or the like, clothing and small toiletries are excepted from this list. Pressurized containers, oxidizers such as bleach, poisons, infectious materials, and corrosives such as drain cleaners, organics such as resin or peroxides, large magnets or any dangerous material including spray cans or chemicals are not allowed in the airport, in checked baggage or on the plane in any form.
- You can bring these items to the airport only if you plan to check them in with your baggage. Doing so may incur extra baggage charges. Allowed items in checked baggage include sports equipment, knives and other cutting instruments, firearms unloaded, locked and packed in a hard case only, Firearm replicas, firearm parts, ammunition packed in secure locked boxes, paintball guns, tools and liquids over three-ounces, snow globes and dry ice. You can check normal batteries but spare lithium batteries are not allowed.
- You may keep money, jewelry, medications or medical devices (with prescription), laptops and other electronic devices in your carry-on. Be aware that carry-on baggage will be scanned and may be searched prior to boarding the plane. You may buy liquids after going through security when you are in the secure area to bring on the plane but you cannot bring beverages through security. Liquids in three-ounce bottles that fit in one-quart Ziploc bags may be brought in your carry-on but may be confiscated. You can bring normal batteries in your carry on. Passports are always allowed and you will need a passport to travel outside of your country at all times.
- In addition to the Transportation Safety Administration's restrictions, each airline may add their own restrictions. Most airlines allow one bag to be checked in, one carry-on item and one personal item such as a laptop or coat on a plane. You can usually bring as second bag for a fee. Some airlines, such as United, have a charge for all checked baggage. This charge changes yearly.
