Alternative Wedding Themes
- At a traditional wedding, the bride and groom take the floor while guests sit in pews and watch. Instead of having your guests be passive observers, have an active wedding where you engage in an outdoor activity. You, your spouse, the individual legalizing the wedding and your guests can hike a trail, boat down a river or horseback ride down a beach. Once at your destination, you can say your vows and proceed with the wedding party.
- If you and your soon-to-be spouse like the fashion, music, food, feel and culture of a certain time period, assign this time period as your wedding theme. For example, a couple that liked the culture of the 60s could dress in the tailored suits and detailed, floral dresses of that time period. The key to a themed wedding is the detail, meaning that your music, food, clothing, decorations and attitude must match completely. If you can, have your guests buy into the theme and come dressed as if they were from that era as well.
- The location you choose for your wedding can also set the theme. For example, holding your wedding on a beach or under a large redwood tree in a forest would produce two very different feels. If you hold your wedding on a beach, you and your guests can come in casual attire, wearing sandals and relaxed, but sophisticated, clothing. Your decorations can be naturally created from things found on the beach, such as branches, moss, shells and sand. Your atmosphere will dramatically alter how your guests come to the wedding and feel once the wedding begins. Alternatively, if you and your spouse would like to travel to a different country but cannot afford to marry there, decorate the building you are getting married in with the traditional decor of that culture, city or country.
- A celebrity wedding can employ everything from your favorite, famous historical couple to your teen idol obsession. An example of the former is Romeo and Juliet, perhaps the most famous symbol of romanticism in literature. An example of the latter is an Elvis wedding, where you, your soon-to-be spouse, your wedding decorations, your food choices and your guests must dress after Elvis Presley, the king of American Rock and Roll. If you and your spouse share an interest in a celebrity or famous figure, you can theme your wedding to honor that person's character, work and influence.
