When to Water Planters?
- Planters made of porous material, such as unglazed clay, evaporate water and dry out the soil at a fast rate, especially when placed in areas of sun. Water these planters every few days or every other day during warm days. Compared to unglazed clay, planters made of plastic and glazed material will not need as frequent watering.
- The size of plant in the planter with relation to amount of soil also determines watering requirement. A small plant in a large planter will not require very frequent watering as the soil retains enough water for plant requirement for at least a few days. A larger plant growing in a small planter is growing in less soil volume and needs frequent watering to supplement its need.
- Check soil before watering planters, as excessive water leads to root diseases. Proper irrigation means providing neither too much water nor too little. A moist soil is adequate for plant growth. Avoid allowing the soil to get too dry between watering or overly wet.
