    Nandinas

    • Several varieties of the nandina or heavenly bamboo (Nandina domestica), an evergreen-to-semievergreen shrub, produce clusters of red berries in the fall and red foliage in the winter. Nandinas grow 6 to 10 feet tall with a 5-foot spread. They prefer partial shade to full sun and moist, well-drained soil. Nandina is hardy in USDA zones 6 to 9. Dwarf cultivars include Fire Power, Harbor Dwarf, San Gabriel and Woods Dwarf, which grow less than 3 feet tall and have red winter foliage. Moyer's Red and Purple Passion grow 4 to 6 feet tall and have bright-red to red-purple foliage.

    Well-Drained Soil

    • Well-drained sites do not retain excess moisture. The redleaf rose (Rosa glauca) grows 7 feet tall and 5 feet wide. It has red and blue-green foliage and produces pink, fragrant blooms in the early spring followed by red fruits that last until fall. The redleaf rose is hardy in USDA zones 3 to 8 and prefers full sun to shade and moist, well-drained soil. The red barberry (Berberis thunbergii var. atropurpurea) has clusters of red-purple, deciduous foliage. This drought-tolerant, adaptable shrub blooms with yellow-and-purple flowers in the spring, followed by bright-red berries that last from fall through winter. Red barberries grow 6 feet tall with an equal spread and are hardy in zones 4 to 8. Plant red barberry in sun to shade and a range of well-drained soils.

    Partial Shade

    • Partially shaded sites receive less than four hours of a day of direct light. The red chokeberry (Aronia arbutifolia) grows slowly to 10 feet tall with a 5-foot-wide spread. This deciduous shrub blooms with white-and-pink, spring flowers, followed by red berries that last through winter. Its foliage turns bright scarlet in fall. Red chokeberries prefer sun to partial shade, tolerate a range of soils from wet to dry and are hardy in USDA zones 4 to 9. The Notcutt cranberry bush virburnum (Viburnum opulus "Notcutt") has deep-red, fall foliage and produces long-lasting, bright-red berries. This deciduous shrub grows to 12 feet tall with a 15-foot spread and is hardy in zones 3 to 8. It prefers sun to partial shade and tolerates a range of soils.

    Japanese Barberries

    • Several varieties of Japanese barberry (B. thunbergii) have red foliage and produce red berries in the fall. All are deciduous, prefer full sun and are hardy to USDA zone 4. The Rose Glow has red-and-white variegated foliage that fades to solid red with age. This deciduous shrub grows 3 to 6 feet tall with arching branches. Plant Rose Glow barberries in well-drained soil. The Crimson Pygmy grows slowly to 2 feet tall with a 3 foot wide spread. It has bright-red foliage and grows in a dense, rounded mound. The Bagatelle only grows from 12 to 16 inches tall. It has red-purple foliage.
