The STD, or sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are infectious diseases that are transmitted through sexual contact. They are among the most common infectious diseases, and the United States has the highest rates of STDs in the industrialized world.

Reduce the risk of sexually transmitted diseases:

€ have regular checkups for STDs
€ learn the symptoms of STDs and seek medical help as soon as possible before any symptoms
€ avoid sex during menstruation
€ avoid anal intercourse, or use a male condom
€ avoid douching

What to do when diagnosed with an STD?

€ Begin treatment immediately, take all medication and follow your doctor's advice.
€ Do not breastfeed or use breast milk to feed the baby.
€ Notify all recent sex partners and urge them to go to doctor.
€ Avoid sexual activity while being treated for sexually transmitted disease.
€ Follow-up tests to make sure the STD have been successfully treated.
