About Casement Windows
Construction
Casement windows are unusual in that they don't slide up and down. The hinges are on the top or side of the windowpane. They typically swing outward and are opened by pushing a lever or cranking a handle. Casement windows are ideal for areas that are difficult to access, such as areas over doors, sinks and stairwells. Open them using cranks set below the window, using an extended push bar on a pole or a simple turn and push motion. Older versions seldom have screens, but modern casements have screen assemblies, hand or remote openers, energy efficient glass and even tinting. They are made of glass and acrylic and have metal, wood or man-made product frames.
Top Hinges
Most casement windows open to the outdoors. For casements with a top hinge, custom window treatments can drop below the bottom edge of the windowsill in a single or double panel. A double panel curtain allows people to look outside. If the custom curtains are in a double panel, tiebacks are an option if the curtains hang low enough. A single panel can block the view unless it is sheer. This is convenient for rooms close to the building next door, where privacy or excessive is a concern.
Side Hinges
Casements with side hinges that swing outward are effective for rooms with green plants or a tropical aquarium, where fresh air and plenty of light is welcome. Roman shades or custom curtains can hang over the window when it is open or closed. A single curtain tieback, or holdback can be used with custom curtains when the windows are open.
Inward Motions
While rare, inward casement windows have their own best window treatments. Attach rods to the interior, inside the frame for custom window curtains that hang free on top- or side-hinge windows. Another option is to attach curtains at the top and bottom of the windowpane. This eliminates the problem of curtains becoming caught in the window. When the window moves, so moves the curtain panel. They can be gathered tightly to provide privacy. Use less sheer materials to block light from entering the room unless the casements are open.
