The Joys of Having a Comfortable Bed

Considering we spend, on average, a third of our life asleep it seems rather daft to spend that time somewhere uncomfortable. A mattress isn't normally high on anyone's list of spending priorities (not when there are holidays and nights out to be paid for), but buying a good quality mattress (and supporting bed) is actually a pretty smart investment.

Why? Think about it. All that time spent on your mattress will, over time, make it go flat and make it less comfortable. And less comfort means less decent sleep. Less decent sleep means more back- and neck-aches, more grumpy mornings and more snappy comments to your partner and/or work colleagues, who in turn can lead to. well, you get the idea.

My husband and I were forever tired and irritable when we moved into our furnished, rented house a few years ago. It took a surprisingly long time (considering we're both educated to post-graduate level) to figure out that it was because our bed frame squeaked whenever either of us moved. We'd been waking up, fractionally, countless times per night. After spending a night in a friend's guest bed, which had a memory-foam mattress and solid wood frame, we were transformed. A night's sleep gave us the brain power we'd needed to figure out that we didn't hate each other really, we just weren't sleeping well. They saved us a fortune in marriage guidance counseling fees.

When you shop for a bed, think about these factors:

1. Size: make sure the one you choose will actually fit in your room (sounds obvious, but better to point this out now than for you to realize it when it's halfway through the doorframe and you've worked out that your wardrobe door won't open if you've opted for the super king size). The bigger you can afford and accommodate, the better - more room for you and your partner to move around in your sleep means less chance of encroaching on each other's space and waking each other up.

2. Mattress type: memory foam mattresses are popular, as are pocket-sprung mattresses. Both will support you well and keep disturbance from your partner's movements to a minimum (think hippo and baby chick).

3. Sleeping position: if you sleep on your back, you'll probably benefit more from a firm mattress than if you sleep on your side.

4. Storage: do you want your bed to double up as a storage unit? Need somewhere you're your bedding to go now that your bedroom is housing an enormous new bed? Opt for a divan with under-bed drawer storage. Or go for a wooden bed, which can look more attractive and modern, and invest in some under-bed storage drawers to slide under.

There are some really beautiful beds on the market, with or without storage. You'll know you've chosen the right bed for you when it gets dark outside and you actually look forward to climbing into that gorgeous comfy oasis and getting a really good night's sleep.
