Ghaziabad is one of the satellite suburban townships of New Delhi on its eastern perimeter. The City of Ghaziabad falls in the State of Uttar Pradesh but is included in the National Capital Region (NCR) allowing it a lot of attention from the Union Government of India. To its south, is Noida (now renamed Gautam Budhha Nagar), another suburban satellite of Delhi.

The district of Ghaziabad is located in the Doab region of India with both the Ganga (Ganges) and Yamuna Rivers flowing through it, making it one of the most fertile areas in the country. The city of Ghaziabad lies on the Grand Trunk road (sher shah suri marg) about a mile east of the Hindon river in Latitude 280 40' North and Longitude 770 25' East.

Ghaziabad was primarily an industrial town outside of Delhi. Today it has grown into an important part of the National Capital Region with newly developed colonies with attractive housing opportunities. A lot of people commute daily to and from Delhi for work. Ghaziabad is home to many small scale and large factories including metal working and fabric. Newer colonies of Ghaziabad include Vaishali, Vasundhara and Indirapuram. Indirapuram incidentally is one of the fastest developing urban areas in the country. Being adjacent to east Delhi, Indirapuram is noticing a big influx of those shifting from East Delhi in search of bigger, better houses / homes with modern infrastructure and facilities. Posh living areas of Ghaziabad include Rajnagar and Kavinagar.

Ghaziabad is an important railway center with more than 100 trains using the facility. It also houses hundreds of educational institutes especially engineering colleges and management schools. The City is very diversified in terms of those who inhabit it. The culture of Ghaziabad is similar to that of Delhi and so is the climate. The city also has world-class, newly erected malls, shopping areas and Medical Facilities. Shipra Mall in Indirapuram is considered among the largest malls in Northern India. Ghaziabad has a significant role in the western part of the State of Uttar Pradesh as it acts as an important trading, medical and entertainment hub to the surrounding smaller townships of Pilkhuwa and Hapur.

Because of Commonwealth Games being hosted by Delhi, Delhi has seen a lot of infrastructure development recently and Ghaziabad has gained tremendously from the same. Underground Metro rail will soon be available to Ghaziabad.

The city was founded in 1740 by the Vazir (Minister), Ghazi-ud-din. He called it Ghaziuddinnagar after himself and built a spacious palace consisting of around 120 rooms. Unfortunately, today, only the gate, and a part of the boundary wall remains along with a big fourteen feet pillar in height. His mausoleum still stands in the city but is in ruins. The city also witnessed a battle between freedom fighters and the British in 1857. The British shortened the name to Ghaziabad. After independence, it became a part of Meerut District. It was only in 1976 that it became the head quarters of an independent district of Uttar Pradesh.
