    • 1). Form a cross from the two-by-fours by laying the longer piece of lumber on the ground. Attach the shorter board onto the longer board with nails to form the arms of the scarecrow.

    • 2). Dress your scarecrow with old clothing. A button down shirt will work best for the arms. Place the longer board through one of the legs of an old pair of jeans or trousers.

    • 3). Place stuffing around the pieces of wood in the arms. For the legs, stuff the leg with the board in it around the board and firmly stuff the leg of the pants without the board. You can use straw or crumpled up newspapers for the stuffing.

    • 4). Use a shovel or post-hole diggers to dig a hole in the ground where you would like your scarecrow.

    • 5). Place the scarecrow post into the ground. Pack the post tightly with the dirt that was shoveled out of the hole.

    • 6). Fill a pillowcase with stuffing to make the head. Slip the stuffed pillowcase over the top post. Tuck the bottom of the pillowcase into the stuffed shirt and tie a rope tightly around the neck to secure it in place.

    • 7). Decorate the face of the scarecrow as desired. Use permanent or fabric markers to create the facial features. Add hats, gloves or other accessories to dress up your scarecrow.

    • 8). Add ribbons or streamers that will move with the wind to deter deer. You may also want to add bells, chimes or even pie plates that bang together to scare off the deer.
