How to Make a Toddler Backpack
- 1). Lay the themed fabric on your work surface and cut a rectangle that measures 25-inches-long-by-10-and-a-half-inches wide. Cut an identical rectangle from the heavy-duty, fusible interfacing.
- 2). Lay the rectangles together with the printed side of the themed fabric facing downward. Iron over the interfacing, according to its directions, to affix it to the fabric. This makes a nice, sturdy fabric for the backpack.
- 3). Fold the rectangle in half to make a 10-and-a-half-inch-by-12-and-a-half-inch rectangle. Fold the fabric with the printed side on the inside. Draw a curved line over the corners opposite the folded edge and cut along the lines. This makes a curved top for the backpack.
- 4). Pin the left sides and then the right sides of the backpack together and sew a straight stitch down each side. Stop at the bottom of each curved line. Stitch along the same line one more time for extra-reinforced sides.
- 5). Turn the backpack right side out through the top opening. Lay the 14-inch-long zipper along the top, open end of the backpack and pin the fabric sides of the zipper to the top, inside edges of the backpack. Open the zipper and sew the fabric sides to the backpack with a straight stitch.
- 6). Cut two pieces of canvas strapping so they are each 20-and-a-half inches long. Fold over a quarter-inch of fabric at one end of each piece of strapping. Pin one folded end to the bottom, right edge of the backpack, about 1 inch from the right side. Pin the folded end of the other piece of strapping to the bottom, left edge of the backpack, about 1 inch from the left side.
- 7). Fold over a quarter-inch at the other ends of the two pieces of strapping and pin these ends just beneath the top edge of the backpack, about 1 inch from the left and right sides. Sew the canvas ends in place at the top and bottom of the backpack to complete the project.
