Before coming to carbon monoxide smoke detectors, first we should say a word or two about carbon monoxide.
Chemically, the gas is produced due to incomplete combustion of carbon.
It is a tasteless and colorless gas.
We know how fatal can be a fire, so we understand that installing smoke detecting devices is of great help.
But what is the need of using detectors for carbon-monoxide gas when there are many other gases also? The reason behind this is carbon-monoxide gas is extremely harmful.
Then also there are other gases with harmful effects too, so the doubt still persists.
Yes, it is true that there are many harmful and dangerous gases.
But the reason behind why we need to be more concerned about CO gas is because it is produced very much in our homes but we are hardly aware of it.
In every household cooking is done and the oven grill is a very common source of carbon monoxide gas.
Burning woods in the fireplaces give us warmth during the winter times.
The fireplace is also a source of CO.
Some of the other sources can be water heaters, barbecue grills, stoves etc.
Now let us find out how fatal the carbon-monoxide gas can be.
It is said that CO gas is one of the prime causes for an accidental poisoning.
It slowly and severely affects us.
We inhale the gas.
Through our respiratory systems it enters our blood system, combines with hemoglobin and absorbs oxygen from brains and other vital body organs.
The consequences can be serious and at the same time fatal.
From temporary or permanent memory damages to even death anything can occur.
Just as we can ensure the safety of our families from fire through smoke detectors, similar detectors are available in the market to ensure safety against carbon monoxide gas.
These devices are called the carbon monoxide smoke detectors and nowadays they are very much needed.
The CO detectors are like ordinary smoke detectors but are equipped with special sensors that are capable of detecting presence of carbon monoxide gas in the surroundings.
Mostly they can record the level of the CO gas and when that level crosses the danger level they give warnings.
On getting such warnings we are able to take necessary actions to take that level below the danger mark and give our families and ourselves a better hazard free life.
