How Did You Learn to Smoke

There are a couple primary ways people learn to smoke; modeling and conditioning.
Most people who take up smoking have their first cigarette in their teenage years because they see someone else doing it.
It could be a family member, friend, mentor or movie star.
When this occurs it is referred to as modeling.
A person learns by watching someone else model the behavior and then tries it themselves.
Obviously, teenagers have the idea in their head that they are indestructible so they push through the coughing, hacking, burning eyes and nasty taste just to feel the effects of nicotine.
Nicotine is a powerful drug, whose addictive properties are compared to that of heroin.
Exposure to nicotine can create a pleasurable feeling in the brain which may lead to conditioning.
Conditioning occurs as a person smokes they may feel like they have more energy, think they are cool or behave in a more confident manner.
Even though these are perceived as positive benefits of smoking they are actually negative because a person doesn't need to be an addict to feel, think and behave this way.
Rarely are the health consequences of smoking considered during this time.
The longer a person smokes to change the way they feel, think and behave the harder it is to quit.
Eventually many smokers can't make it through the day because they think they need a cigarette to deal with stress, boredom, hunger, deadlines, anger, frustration, anxiety, and the like.
Not to mention the uncomfortable feelings of nicotine withdrawal the body experiences between cigarettes.
Smoking is a learned behavior, people aren't born smokers.
It poisons the body of smokers and everyone exposed to it.
There is no safe level of exposure and has devastating effects on society costing hundreds of millions of dollars each year not to mention the hundreds of thousands that die annually from a smoking related illness.
The good news is that smoking can be unlearned but first you need to recognize that you need help and want to quit.
Recognize the reasons and triggers that make you want to smoke and develop a plan to manage your life to avoid or minimize them.
Consider the watching eyes; are you parenting by example hoping your little ones won't follow in your footsteps? There is a reason we have a saying, "The apple doesn't fall far from the tree.
" because often, it doesn't.
Consider the impact your actions are having on your family and how you have been conditioned.
There is no better day than today to undo the damage you have done and take your life back.
You can't lock yourself in a tower but you can learn new healthy ways of coping with daily life.
