Capsule hotels are uniquely Japanese. They are a good alternative to hotel rooms, due to high prices in Japan. Capsule hotels are made up of many cockpit-like pods, side by side and two pods high, about six feet long, three feet wide and four feet tall. Inside the capsule, and easily within reach when lying down, is a TV, radio, alarm clock and adjustable light. There is no door, only a curtain. A locker is provided outside the pod for medium-sized bags. The washroom facilities are shared and there is often a sauna on-site. Many of these hotels are for men only and offer capsule and private rooms. If women are allowed, they usually must stay in a private room.
