The Bottom Line

?Solaris? is sci-fi without action sequences, razzle-dazzle special effects, or gee-whiz high-tech gadgetry, but I found the movie to be very intellectually engaging.

Guide Review - ?Solaris? (2002) DVD Review

?Solaris? (2002) is sci-fi without action sequences, razzle-dazzle special effects, or gee-whiz high-tech gadgetry, but I found the movie to be very intellectually engaging. Set sometime in the future, it?s about the romantic love between a man (George Clooney) and a facsimile of his deceased wife (Natascha McElhone). A major character in the film is a planet that functions like a giant, single living organism having consciousness and intelligence. This is a cerebral movie, and I fear viewers wanting a highly emotional experience may be disappointed. I expect those who aren?t already familiar with the ?Solaris? story will find the 2002 film hard to understand on first viewing, but on DVD you can watch it repeatedly.
