How to Assemble a Section 8 Applicant File
- 1). Gather documents that prove your identity, along with those of anyone who will live with you. Make copies of state-issued I.D. cards and Social Security cards. Additionally, make a copy of your birth certificate. If you are an immigrant, make copies of your immigration documents. Although you are making copies of each document, be sure to bring the originals with you in a separate folder just in case the representative wants to view them.
- 2). Gather documents that prove your sources of income, along with those of anyone who will live with you. You need to report all sources of income, including wages, investments and any other income source. The Section 8 office will need to confirm that you meet the Section 8 income guidelines. Make copies of your W-2, pay stubs for the last three months, Social Security award letter, child support, public assistance verification -- such as Temporary Aid for Needy Families -- pension, military allotment or unemployment compensation.
- 3). Gather documents that prove your assets, along with those of anyone who will live with you. Make copies of checking and savings account statements, as well as property documents that state their fair market value. Additionally, make copies of other documents relating to stocks, bonds, money market accounts or certificates of deposit.
- 4). Make copies of documents verifying that any underage children are enrolled in school or college. When children reach the age of majority, they will be expected to contribute to the monthly rental amount. Make copies of your child's school enrollment forms.
- 5). Gather documents related to your rental history. For example, have copies of prior leases or reference letters from former landlords. Section 8 authorities may contact former landlords to verify your previous occupancies.
