Gifts for New Siblings

Having a new baby in the house can be difficult for everyone, but sometimes the other kids wind up taking a lot of the brunt. This can be because they are under prepared, too young, or simply thought to be able to handle more than they really can. Some kids even have other things going on in their own lives that make the addition of a new baby, well, let's just say, less than ideal. That said, sometimes there is simply nothing you can do but march forward. Here are some gifts that might be able to stem that tide a bit.

Don't Feed the Worry Bug

I actually love that this is not specific to having a baby. Sometimes when the book or video addresses the issue on the head it can make it worse. It presumes that we know what's making someone worried. The truth is, we all worry, some more than others. This nice book and sentiment can go a long way at not only helping a child understand how worry happens and why it can get so big so quickly, but also how to cope with it and that it is something that may crop up more than once. This is actually a book by Andi Green. The book is a singy songy, rhyme book and a worrier, Wince, who is followed by a Worry Bug. The story walks us through what happens when Wince accidentally feeds the Worry Bug, and how he can make it go back - all within his power. There is an accompanying stuff Wince and stuffed Worry Bug. You can also buy other titles in this series. Compare Prices.More »

There's a Baby

There's a Baby! This is a neat video designed to prepare a new sibling to the idea of a new baby. This is really geared towards younger children and should be brought out well before the new baby is due. It can be a great way to talk about some of the harder concepts like actually having a baby in the house, etc. This is the brain child of Penny Simkin, long time childbirth educator and doula.More »

Master Piece a Month

This is a neat subscription box for an older child. I can see this as being used when mom or dad needs the older sibling to be involved, but happy, and not needing a lot of attention. This is an art box that comes with the supplies to recreate the masterpiece of a famous artist. The first box, for example, is Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh. This could get messy in the wrong hands, so you will need to decide if it's the right thing for your family or if you do it, you may decide it gets done with someone else supervising. The pros are that it comes once a month and you don't have to plan for it - it just happens. The cons are that it can be messy and or require supervision, depending on your child. (This may also be what attracts you to this gift.)More »

Sibling T-Shirts

Yes, this is a tried and true gift, but it works for a reason. I love the variety that you see nowadays. It certainly runs the gamut from typical to the wild. I also love that you can have matching baby shirts too. (This makes for a great photo shoot!) You can also find some that are a bit snarkier than others. More »
