How to Hook Up a Home Phone

    • 1). Call a local phone service near you to sign up or have someone connect phone lines to your home if you do not already have them. If you do, phone service can be activated directly, depending on the previous service you had installed (if there was any).

    • 2). Locate a phone cord port with a line coming from a wall in your home. You may have multiple phone cords and lines, but not all of them may be active. You can also inquire about this information by calling your phone service company directly.

    • 3). Set up your home phone as its user manual or guide directs you to, including installing any batteries if needed. Plug in the phone's cord to an electrical outlet if there is one near your home's phone cord that you are going to use.

    • 4). Plug the phone cord line from your wall into the home phone system's open port (usually located on one of the phone's sides). If your phone is powered on it may automatically sync and then you can begin dialing any phone number as you normally would. However, if your phone is not working properly, you must follow the phone's setup instructions or on-screen prompts, depending on the phone, to properly configure the phone and its calling and dialing settings. Reference your home phone's user manual for further information on specific settings, since each phone make and model's features can vary greatly.
