How to Grow Mushrooms in the Kitchen
- 1). Purchase mushroom spores--which look like tiny seeds--or something called spawn--which look like threads--at a store that sells gardening supplies.
- 2). Place 3 inches of composted manure in a tray. Put it on top of a heating pad, which must be about 75 degrees.
- 3). Sprinkle the spores or spawn across the composted manure and let them sit on top of the soil. Mist some water over the spores/spawn.
- 4). Set the tray in a dark area of the kitchen with the heating pad in place. Mushrooms will not flourish in direct sunlight. Mushrooms will start to sprout in a few weeks depending on the species.
- 5). Set the heating pad to about 60 degrees after the spawn/spores have taken root, and put a thin layer of soil over the growing mushrooms. Keep it damp by wetting a towel, wringing it out, and covering the pan with it. The soil must stay moist at all times. Cut the mushrooms for use after a few weeks of sprouting.
