Care For a Hazelnut Tree

    • 1). Plant hazelnut trees in well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter. Choose a location protected from high winds and in which the plant will receive full sunlight in spring and summer.

    • 2). Water newly planted trees every five to seven days the first year. Water at the base of the tree, moistening the soil to a depth of 10 to 12 inches. Once established, hazlenut trees require watering only during extended dry periods.

    • 3). Weed the area under the canopy to prevent weeds from becoming established and competing with the tree. Spread a 3-inch layer of mulch over the ground around the tree to help prevent weed growth.

    • 4). Prune out the suckers, the small branches that form at the base of the tree. Cut them off flush with the soil with a pair of pruning shears. Leaving the suckers in place causes the hazelnut to grow as a bush instead of as a tree.

    • 5). Apply fertilizer beginning in the second year after planting. Use a nitrogen fertilizer at the rate of 1 ounce per 10 square feet of planting area.
