Needs Vs Wants - Is the Difference Really That Clear?

When it comes down to it, what really constitutes needs vs wants? Let's look at definitions.
Needs = Necessities Wants = Desires In a really simplified explanation, needs are things you cannot live without or are an essential part of your life - like food, water, shelter, etc.
Wants are 'nice to have' but your life won't end without them - like a bigger house, an iPhone etc.
But in today's fast paced life, is the line dividing needs vs wants really that clear? Consider the following 'needs' and you will realize that in certain cases, one man's needs can be another man's wants: * A salesperson that works out of his car and is on the road all the time needs his cell phone for his professional survival.
* A musician needs his instrument.
* You work 30 miles away from home and need a car to get to and from work.
* A married couple with kids needs to have one 'date night' a month to improve the relationship.
* A research student needs an internet connection to have access to knowledge.
As you try to find a distinction between your wants versus needs, keep in mind a few things.
It's not wrong to want things you don't need.
And how boring life would be if there were no wants in the world! Wanting something can actually give you the motivation to strive for it.
But you alone are a judge of how essential an item is for YOUR life.
So when you're making your household budget and trying to figure out the wants and needs, ask yourself 'do I need it?' And if the answer is no, then it's a want.
