Becoming a Wedding DJ

    Equipment

    • The first step to becoming a wedding DJ is getting the equipment. You will need a DJ station, turntables or a CD player, decent quality stage speakers and hundreds of popular discs. You can find most equipment at a music store or, if you are lucky, in the classified ads. There are also DJ supply stores online. You should stock up on songs that people love to hear at weddings, from classic love songs to hot new hip-hop.

    Getting Your First Gig

    • If you are just starting out, print out some business cards and maybe make a flier or two. You can also post an ad on Craigslist for a high-quality, low-cost DJ. When you are just starting, you may want to undercharge just until you get a few clients and can post their testimonials on your website, which you should also be developing. If you get no work, volunteer at a friend's wedding, a senior dance or any other function. Any DJ experience will help you get more work.

    Songs to Play

    • DJs need to know music and they need to have scores of discs to play. It is a good idea to buy them new, and not rely on downloads from the Internet. MP3 songs are not CD quality no matter what a computer programmer tries to tell you. They may cover the full range of sounds a human ear can distinguish, but that doesn't mean every sound is there. They will sound odd played on loud speakers. Find discount CD stores or try Secondspin.com to build up your collection of tunes. Think romance, fun, hip-hop and pop songs plus '80s classics, which many people love to dance to.
