New York Colleges for Chemistry
- The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) predicts that the demand for chemists will increase by 3 percent through 2018, resulting in the creation of 3,300 new jobs in the field. Individuals with an interest in chemistry need a minimum of a bachelor's degree to work in the field, explains the BLS, but most independent research jobs require a master's or Ph.D. in the field. In New York, colleges with programs in chemistry are found throughout the state.
- Buffalo State College was founded in 1871 and is a member of the State University of New York network of public colleges. The school's urban setting in Buffalo is home to over 9,300 students. Undergraduate chemistry majors at the school select an area of concentration in chemistry or biochemistry. For the 2009-10 school year, the cost of tuition and fees for one year of undergraduate study at Buffalo State was $5,995 for New York residents and $13,895 for non-residents.

Based in rural Hamilton, the institution was founded in 1819 and has an undergraduate enrollment of over 2,800 students. The nearly 7,500 students at the private university call New York City home, and the school has been located in its same spot on Broadway since its founding in 1754. Columbia grants bachelor's degrees in chemistry, biochemistry, chemical physics and environmental chemistry. During the 2009-10 school year, the cost of one year's tuition and fees for undergraduate study at Columbia was $41,316. The university also grants master's and doctoral degrees in chemistry.

The school was founded in 1824 and received a ranking of 42 among national universities in the U.S. News and World Report's Best Colleges of 2010. The chemistry department awards bachelor's degrees in environmental chemistry, materials chemistry, polymer chemistry, medicinal chemistry, engineering chemistry, forensic science and cheminformatics. The school also features a program that allows students to graduate after five years with both a bachelor's and master's degree. The cost of undergraduate tuition was $39,165 during the 2009-10 school year. Rensselaer also offers a stand-alone master's in chemistry as well as doctorate of philosophy degree in the field.
