The Super Mario Bros. franchise is usually limited to Nintendo systems like the NES, SNES, N64 and Wii, but there are a number of titles available for the home computer. While these games usually differ greatly from the typical Mario fare, they still feature the Mario Universe and characters like Luigi, Bowser and Yoshi. - Instead of dealing with serious typing programs like Mavis Beacon players can enter the world of Mario to obtain typing skills. Originally released in 1991, players follow on-screen typing directions and in-between sessions there are humorous cut-scenes with Mario, Luigi and Princess Toadstool.
- The sequel to "Mario Teaches Typing" has more interactive features for players are they type through lessons and objectives to retrieve pieces to a magical typewriter. Parents can get involved too and print out certificates for the children after they beat levels and build typing skills.
- Luigi gets his first starring role in a Mario game; one that was released for the PC as well as NES and SNES gaming consoles. In the game, Bowser has Mario captured and Luigi must travel around the world to retrieve and return famous artifacts. Within the game, children can learn a lot about geography and still enjoy classic Mario game play.
- "Super Mario 3" is a popular game for the NES and the free computer version entitled "Super Mario 3: Forever" duplicates much of that success. The game features eight different themed worlds including "Desert World," "Pipe World," "Sky World," "Ice World" and "Green World." The ship battles are challenging and Mario's ability to fly adds even more to the game. Playing this classic on a computer only confirms why it is one of the best Mario PC games available.
- Super Mario War was not created by Nintendo, but it features hundreds of levels and endless game possibilities. The game is like a mix between Mario and Mortal Kombat where players must destroy opponents by bouncing off their head. There are dozens of classic Mario characters to choose from, and players can find power-ups and play in hundreds of levels or even create their own level. Game modes include "Elimination," "Time-Trial" or "Deathmatch," where each player receives a certain number of deaths. You can play up to four players at one time.
