How to Pick Curtains for Your Window
- 1). Figure out if you would prefer sheer curtains or thicker curtains. This will help you decide what type of fabric to choose. Sheer curtains will let in more natural light and appear more casual. Dark, opaque curtains block out sunlight when you want and will give the room a more formal look. Opt for lighter colored opaque fabrics if you want a casual look that can also block out the sun.
- 2). Get some fabric samples so you can start comparing the color and texture to the existing designs, patterns and colors in the room. Pick out a few colors you wouldn't have thought would work just to try them out. You never know what will look good until you see it in the room.
- 3). Check out the various styles of curtains. Rod pocket curtains, for example, slide over a rod and then drape down over your window. Tab tops are more casual. Only small tabs are placed through the rod, rather than the whole top of the curtain. Ring top curtains are similar to tab top, but they have small rings instead of fabric tabs to go over the rod. Finally, grommet top curtains give a heavier pleat because the fabric is slid over the rod using rings that are embedded in the top of the curtain.
- 4). Look for various options of curtain hardware. The hardware needs to not only match the color and style you chose, but also the rest of your room. For example, if you have dark wood furniture in your room, then you would want to go with dark brown or deep gold hardware instead of brighter colors. The rod can be plain or decorative.
- 5). Consider adding a tieback to your curtains. Rope tiebacks with long tassels can give a more formal look, while flat tiebacks can give more of a traditional feel to your home. For a more modern look, opt for a hardware tieback, such as a hook on the wall.
